Q. 1. How exactly DO your espresso machines work?
A. Espresso machines work in much the same way as a regular coffee maker. The difference is that espresso machines forcing steam or hot water through finely ground darkly roasted coffee beans, which causes the coffee to brew much faster.

Q. 2. Who invented espresso and why?
A. Espresso was invented in 1903 by an Italian manufacturer named Luigi Bezzera. While looking for a faster way to brew coffee, Bezzera discovered that by adding steam-pressure to a regular coffee machine not only was the process sped up , but that the coffee also tasted better. He dubbed his new invention the "Fast Coffee Machine" which has been adapted to its current name "espresso" which means "fast" in Italian. Bezzera sold the rights to the machine to Desidero Pavoni in 1905. Pavoni was able to successfully market the machine to the Italian people, thereby fundamentally altering the way Italians drink coffee.

Q. 3. What makes espresso different from coffee?
A. Because the pressure in an espresso machine forces water through the coffee grinds much faster than a regular coffee maker, the resulting espresso is not only produced much faster but also tastes better. This is because the pressurized water is able to more efficiently extract of the best qualities of the coffee bean.

Q. 9. What are the advantages of owning a semi-automatic espresso machine?

Q. 12. Pods or capsules vs. ground beans?
A. Pods and capsules are not recommended. For best results, use freshly roasted beans and grind them yourself at home. Coffee loses much of its flavor very shortly after being ground and the coffee in pods and capsules was most likely ground long before you use it.

Q. 13. Why should I backflush?
A. Backflushing is an important way of keeping your machine clean so that it continues to produce the freshest espresso possible. Coffee oils and deposits can build up in the machine, causing it to produce coffee that tastes bitter and rancid. You will be able to tell when your machine needs to be backflushed if you notice reduced brewing pressure (caused by the build-up of minerals on the machines three-way valve), or if the three-way valve is constantly dripping during the brewing process.
